A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER BY THE AUTHOR OF TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW
“A fun, page-turning delight.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune
“Funny, tender, and moving, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry reminds us all exactly why we read and why we love.” —Library Journal (starred review)
A. J. Fikry’s life is not at all what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance to make his life over—and see everything anew.
My Verdict
This was set up immediately to be my kind of story -- it is set in an independently owned bookstore!
At the beginning of each chapter are what appear to be shelf-talkers: brief notes recommending a classic short story or collection of short stories. But these are more than just anonymous notes to passing customers. They’re small expressions of a parent’s love, passing along a passion for writing and reading and good stories.
Zevin has written an entertaining novel, modest in its scope, engaging and funny without being cloying or sentimental. On top of all that, it is marvelously optimistic about the future of books and bookstores and the people who love both. It is also a story about loneliness, despair, family, and hope.
Some people love this one and some do not care for it at all, but I loved it. I give this book 5 stars.
